The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken a significant step in the fight against robocalls with the implementation of the STIR/SHAKEN framework. This set of technical standards and protocols is designed to ensure the authenticity of caller ID information for calls transmitted over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
STIR (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited) and SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs) work together to allow telephone service providers to verify that the caller ID information transmitted with a call matches the caller's real phone number. This verification process helps to identify and reduce the effectiveness of fraudulently spoofed calls, which are often used by scammers to deceive recipients into answering their phones.
Robocalls remain a significant issue, with billions of these calls plaguing consumers annually. In 2023, Americans received an estimated 55 billion robocalls, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. These calls are not just a nuisance but also a potential avenue for fraud and scams, making the need for effective countermeasures like STIR/SHAKEN all the more critical.
